About Sophie Smith
Sophie is a psychologist with two endorsed areas of practice: clinical psychology and educational & developmental psychology. She has been a member of the Australian Psychological Society for more than 15 years. She is currently a member of the Clinical College and provides psychological assessment and therapy services under the Medicare Better Access Initiative. This allows clients to access the maximum rebate from Medicare for services provided by a psychologist. Sophie's practice offers on the spot claiming for Medicare.
Since having her two children, Sophie has worked in private practice in Lane Cove providing psychological assessment and therapy to children, adolescents, parents and young adults. In 2017, the The Young Mind Clinic was started in Burns Bay Rd, Lane Cove, where Sophie practices and is the Clinic Director (www.theyoungmindclinic.com for more information).
Prior to this she worked in a private school setting in Sydney, providing assessment, individual and group intervention to children and adolescents, professional support to teachers, consultation and seminars for parents in addition to input on policies and procedures around assessment and bullying within the school. Sophie provided services across the whole school from preschool age, through infants, primary and the senior school..
In conjunction with her work with young people and their parents, Sophie has worked within adult psychiatry providing individual and group psychological intervention in an inpatient setting, working with a range of adult mental health issues.
Sophie has also previously been employed as casual lecturer and marker for the University of Western Sydney in addition to speaking at an international conference in Sydney around issues of mental health in young people. As a Board Approved Supervisor, Sophie has provided professional supervision to school counsellors and psychologists as well as registrars in the Clinical and Ed/Dev endorsement areas. .
Sophie has a strong interest and expertise in parenting and behaviour issues in children, however her cognitive behavioural training provides a basis for treating a wide range of clinical issues.
