About Sophie Smith
Sophie is a psychologist with two endorsed areas of practice: clinical psychology and educational & developmental psychology. She has been a member of the Australian Psychological Society for more than 20 years. She is currently a member of the Clinical College and provides psychological assessment and therapy services under the Medicare Better Access Initiative. This allows clients to access the maximum rebate from Medicare for services provided by a psychologist.
Since having her two children, Sophie has worked in private practice in Sydney providing psychological assessment and therapy to children, adolescents, parents and young adults. In 2017, Sophie opened the The Young Mind Clinic in Lane Cove (www.theyoungmindclinic.com), where Sophie provides supervision to the clinical team of psychologists and remains in the role of Clinic Director.
Prior to this she worked in the school setting in Sydney, providing assessment, individual and group intervention to children and adolescents, professional support to teachers, consultation and seminars for parents in addition to input on policies and procedures around assessment and bullying within the school. Sophie provided services across the whole school from preschool age, through infants, primary and the senior school..
In conjunction with her work with young people and their parents, Sophie has worked within adult psychiatry providing individual and group psychological intervention in an inpatient setting, working with a range of adult mental health issues.
Sophie has also previously been employed as casual lecturer and marker for Western Sydney University in addition to speaking at conferences in Sydney around issues of mental health in young people from the perspective of a psychologist in clinical practice. As a Board Approved Supervisor, Sophie has provided clinical supervision to school counsellors, psychologists including registrars in the Clinical and Ed/Dev endorsement areas, as well as provisional psychologists and other health professionals such as social workers and counsellors.
Sophie's 20+ years working with clients places her in a position to bring a wealth of wisdom and understanding to her clinical work with clients and supervisees. Her deep knowledge of young people allows her to connect with the context and common difficulties faced by young people. This allows her to both "climb inside the problem" readily whilst maintaining a "birds eye view", therefore allowing her to develop a deep understanding of the individual client's struggle and what they need to progress forward. This is a skills she hopes to nurture in her supervisees, so they are able to see their client with clarity and empathy.
